Want to know more about Tec and Cave diving?
Who better to show you than Don Shirley and Peter Herbst?!
These guys have been part and parcel of the SA (tek) diving scene for the past 20 plus years and have been part of the now world famous Bushmansgat body recovery in 2005 where Australian Dave Shaw lost his life so tragically.
These are the guys that will introduce you to all that TECHY stuff ;)
Don is the doyen of Tek diving in South Africa. He is the IANTD licensee for Southern Africa and has been diving since 1974, teaching recreational and Technical diving. He was a member of the first Army sanctioned sport Trimix expedition to find and dive on the sunken HMS Pheasant, a WW1 destroyer lost with all hands in 1917.
Don’s main diving passion is Closed Circuit Rebreather diving in Caves, and his area of expertise is training all forms of technical diving. He currently resides at Komati Springs dive site with his wife André, where they have been teaching technical diving for 23 years.
Peter Herbst (BigB) is the owner of Reef Divers a PADI five star IDC centre based in Pretoria , South Africa .He oversees all Instructional activities and is an active PADI Course Director (for fun stuff) , IANTD Instructor Trainer ( for deep stuff), Rebreather Instructor( for quiet stuff), Cave Diver, DSAT TecRec Trimix Instructor trainer and generally knows stuff…Peter has been actively teaching Scuba Diving since 1994 and have certified in excess of 1000 divers at various levels of the sport.
Komati Springs is located in Nkomazi Game reserve, Badplaas , aproximately 3 hours from JHB/Pretoria. This unique diving site was an asbestos mine prior to 1972 ( now fully recalaimed), after it closed the groundwater rose back naturally, providing the most amazing cave and cavern systems! The deeper you go the clearer it becomes! Don like it so much when he first dived there he bought the place!
